“No man should go through life without once experiencing healthy, even bored solitude in the wilderness, finding himself depending solely on himself and thereby learning his true and hidden strength. Learning for instance, to eat when he’s hungry and sleep when he’s sleepy.”

I came across this quote just now on the internet and it made me realize how scared-to-the-bones I am about such an “obligatory wilderness” in life.  Yes, I’ve had hardships but not one that made me discover a “hidden strength.”  But then again, Mr. Kerouac put it so simply almost to a no-brainer way of putting it: eat when hungry, sleep when sleepy.
So why does this idea scare me again?
